Directions Toward Independence Directions Toward Independence offers training to people who live independently. Through the program, funded by Tri-Counties Regional Center, skills such as shopping, cooking, money management, community mobility, handling checking and savings accounts, interpersonal relationships, making change, learning to tell time and others are taught to the clients. Most of the training is one-on-one with each session highly customized for maximum progress. Training is usually offered in the privacy of each person's home, although there are times that a session may take place in the community, such as in the case of shopping skills, community orientation and understanding traffic and pedestrian signage. Free out-of-town excursions and craft classes are also offered through DTI FUN DAY. The DTI program also handles minor crisis intervention and assists with many miscellaneous needs that an individual may encounter. The program acts as a liaison between the consumer and Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, legal assistance, the police, the Housing Authority and many other agencies. The program's focus is on the consumer's rights and treating them with respect. Each consumer has a great deal of say regarding what independent living skills they wish to study. We currently offer services in three languages: English, Spanish, and Hmong. |
